2021 Information - Forest Cliff Camp

May 18, 2021

Dear Camper Family,

Since last year, we have been diligently preparing for camp to re-open so we can once again host children and youth for an unforgettable, life changing week of day camp or overnight camp.

During that time we have hired dozens of staff, invested in new camp activities and had over 2000 campers reserve their spot for this coming summer.

Throughout our planning, camper and staff safety has remained the top priority. Our second priority has been to provide the same great Forest Cliff Camp experience that campers love and parents trust.

As the summer season approaches, we have become increasingly concerned about the short time frame to implement the long awaited guidelines from public health authorities and the remaining uncertainties in operating overnight camp. Despite our best efforts to re-open overnight camp this summer, we have some disappointing news to share.

After careful consideration of the recently released draft guidelines and their impact on our overnight camp programs, we have decided to cancel overnight camps at Forest Cliff Camps in 2021.

Challenging items include:

  • Quarantine - A requirement for campers, their families and staff members to isolate for 14 days before arriving at camp.

  • Colour zones - Uncertainty of our ability to welcome campers from certain regions in Ontario or to even operate depending on what “colour” our region is at over the summer season.

  • Cohorts - Heavy restrictions on groups of unmasked campers that live together, how they move through our program and potentially even needing to reduce our capacity lower than 50% to ensure compliance.

  • Dozens of other considerations - The potential of facing dozens of issues like testing requirements, symptomatic campers being dismissed from camp, activity restrictions, risk of closure if a participant tests positive, etc.

With the impact of the guidelines and remaining uncertainties this summer, overnight camp would not be the experience Forest Cliff Campers have come to know and love.

This is a huge loss for our campers, families, staff and community. We understand how much camp means to all of you and know the disappointment and tears this decision will bring. We share your disappointment and want you to know that we have not made this decision lightly.

It breaks our hearts that we’ve come to this conclusion. We had hoped for a better end to this story and to see your camper enjoying a much needed week of overnight camp this summer.

We want to thank you for the trust you showed in us through your enthusiasm and willingness to reserve your camper’s week of overnight camp at Forest Cliff despite the uncertainty that the COVID-19 pandemic has created.

With a decision like this, we expect that you may have more questions for us. In the coming days we will provide you with an opportunity to talk with Tyler Shaule, Forest Cliff Camps’ Executive Director.

Our Plans for this Summer

Moving forward, we will be focusing on our existing Day Camps across Southwestern Ontario. Day camps have well established guidelines in an environment that is similar to in-person school. We are confident that we will be able to operate across 11 day camp locations and host over 2300 campers for a memorable, safe and fun week of camp, closer to home!

We would like to invite your SK - grade 5 camper to join us at one of our day camp locations this summer! You can sign into your account to add a session (or two). Your account balance will be adjusted as needed.

Our aim is to see as many of our happy campers as possible this summer and we are looking forward to planning new and creative ways to make that happen!

Later this week, we will be announcing alternative programs for SALT as well as a new way to experience Forest Cliff as a family!

In our upcoming email, we will be providing options for the funds in your online account. We would like to encourage you to consider applying your funds to a day camp session or requesting a credit to the 2022 camp season. In addition, you will also have the option to donate or request a refund.

God bless,

Tyler Shaule - Executive Director
